Louis Black Calls for Renewed Support for Local Filmmakers

Austin, Texas Dec 22, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - Louis Black, co-founder of The Austin Chronicle and South by Southwest (SXSW), is raising awareness for the growing need to support local and independent filmmakers. Drawing from his decades of experience shaping Austins creative scene, Black is urging audiences, institutions, and individuals to recommit to grassroots storytelling and community-driven cinema.

Ive spent my whole life connecting people, says Black. From the start, it was about helping people find a way in. That hasnt changedbut the support systems around them have.

In an age of franchise blockbusters and algorithm-driven content, Black sees a growing gap in opportunity. According to a 2024 report by Film Independent, only 7% of films released nationally in the U.S. are made by first-time feature directors. Independent movie theaters have declined by 35% over the last decade.

We built platforms like SXSW and Austin Studios to give people a shot, Black explains. Now its time to make sure the next generation still gets that chance.

Black speaks from experience. He co-founded SXSW with no event planning background, hoping for 150 attendees. Seven hundred came. In the early 1990s, he supported a then-unknown Robert Rodriguez, who couldnt get into film school due to grades but gained entry after winning a local contest.

Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity, he says. We just have to make sure those doors stay open.

What You Can Do

Blacks message isnt just for industry insidersits for everyone. He encourages people to:

  • Attend local screenings
  • Support community film centers and grants
  • Promote diverse voices in cinema
  • Mentor or sponsor emerging creatives
  • Buy a ticket to a small film instead of streaming another blockbuster

You dont have to be a critic or a filmmaker, he says. Just show up. Watch something new. Talk about it. Thats how culture grows.

Looking Ahead

Even now, Black isnt slowing down. He recently completed a book on director Jonathan Demme, is producing new film projects, and plans to open a used bookstore in Austin.

Im not done yet, he says. There are still stories worth tellingand people who just need a little help getting started.
